Write ten questions your customers would ask, run each one in the main AI assistants, and record whether your business is mentioned, recommended first, or cited, and which competitors appear instead. Repeat monthly to see the trend.
Step 1: write your questions
Use the way real customers phrase things, not your brand name. Aim for about ten across these types:
- Category and place: "best family dentist in Austin"
- Problem-based: "who can fix a broken tooth today near me"
- Comparison: "how do I choose between dentists in Austin"
- Brand: "is Riverside Family Dental any good"
The business in these examples is fictional. Swap in your own service and city.
Step 2: run them in each assistant
Ask every question in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, in a fresh conversation each time. Answers can differ from one try to the next, so run each question two or three times if you can.
Step 3: record the results
| Question | Assistant | Named? | Recommended first? | Cited a source? | Competitors named |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| best family dentist in Austin | Perplexity | Yes | No | Yes | Two others |
| best family dentist in Austin | ChatGPT | No | No | No | Three others |
The two rows above are an example of how to fill it in, not real results.
Step 4: read the pattern
- Never named: assistants may not be able to identify you. Check your details and structured data.
- Named but not first: competitors have stronger mentions or reviews.
- Named with wrong facts: fix your listings and pages so the details agree.
Step 5: repeat every month
One test is a snapshot. The trend over several months tells you whether your changes are working.
